Essay 2 Vs. Essay 1

Filed under: Uncategorized — kensman at 10:12 pm on Sunday, February 17, 2008

The challenges that I hope to overcome are being able to expand more on my ideas. I don’t have a problem of coming up with ideas, I only have difficulty elaborating on them. Aside from developing lengthier main points, I will need to perfect the synthesis technique. Since this is an essential to passing essay two I will need to verify that it has been completed correctly. Also, I think I need to make sure that each of my points relate back to my thesis that way the reader does not get lost on the overall point of the paper.

Essay one helped ease me into the writing process and also helped build a little confidence in my writing skills. Because of this I am hoping that essay two will come easier to me and it will have a better flow to it.

Writing Styles

When first starting off an essay, there are many different paths one can choose to take. I, personally, feel that I do a mixture of the techniques suggested in From Inquiry to Academic Writing and also different tools that I have learned in the past english calsses that I have taken. While reading the articles, I make sure that I am annotating well and will most likely go over the readings at least twice just to make sure Im understanding everything correctly. Second, making a list of similarities between the articles helps me select what I feel is most interesting for myself and is a decent arguable topic. I then formulate my thesis. After I finished preparing a strong thesis statement, I then layout an outline to make sure that the organization of my paper is right on. Finally, its time to start writing! For this particular essay, I will use the explanations of synthesis in the book, and also the examples that were presented in class. Although, I am still unsure about the synthesis writing technique, I feel that the general writing style that I have grasped from both the book and in class will help me write a strong paper.

Comparison between Schlosser and Jenkins

The articles “Your Trusted Friends” written by Eric Schlosser, and “Cpmplete Freedom of Movement”:Video Games as Gendered Play Spaces composed my Henry Jenkins meet some of the same criteria as one another. Both articles contain an easy read quality that allows the reader to read the article and understand it without having to take extra time to look up words or re-read the passage to grasp the concept better. A technique that both authors use to benefit themselves in the category of readability is the use of subtitles to improve the organization of the overall article. Each article is titled something, but as one prgresses through the article they will come upon different subdivisions and slightly different topics compared to the main. By allowing the reader to know what they are about to read it will furthermor help them understand the article. Another similarity between both Schlossler and Jenkin’s articles is that they are both focused around children. In “Your Trusted Friends” Schlosser discusses the increased marketing system that is geared towards the youth and in Jenkins article he talks about the boys vs. girls standpoint in the way that they are brought up. A way that this relates to one another is because one of the main companies that Schlossers passage focused on was the McDonald company, the McDonald company for years has produced two seperate toys to hand out in each kid’s meal, a toy for a female and a different toy for a male child. This also furthers into the concept of the difference between boys and girls and what influences that difference. I am sure that there are many other similarities between the two articles but I am going to have to venture into a deeper thought to grasp the ideas.

Essay #1

The rough draft that I have written for the first essay in ENG 112x needs a lot of work. The revisions that I am going to focus on are appealing to the audience more, especially in the first paragraph. Also, I am going to approach the rebuttal in my paper a different way that will hopefully prove to my audience that my points are logistic and that my paper is very professional. Lastly, I need to do a quick clean up on my paper by changing punctuation and typos. The writing process that I have been using thus far consists of first starting off with a clear thesis, and then preparing a short outline. In order to benefit my finished product I am going to need to produce a more detailed outline which will allow me to double check the organization of my paper. I am also going to have to really sit, relax, and sort my thoughts out clearly so I am able to make sure that I am conveying the topic of my essay efficiently. Peer review is an amazing technique that has strengthened my papers, and improved the thought process in which I use to pick out the most important things to focus on in a paper. By allowing others around me to look over my work before the final copy is made is crucial to helping me learn about the writing process as a whole but more specifically my own writing process. As one looks over the work they are able to pick out intricate details that I myself have skipped over, simply because it is my own work. Continuing to use the peer review process after college and in the work place is also going to be a tool that will be crucial into performing to the best of your abilities. Having a different opinion than your own is important and should be used as much as possible to make sure that the subbmitted piece is up to par. This tool is a definite necessity that people should use for the long run.

People are faced daily with many decisions in their lives. Usually 9 times out of 10 they make their decisions based on certain criteria that would make the most defense for the best product or whatever else it is that they may face. Almost 3 years ago my parents told me that I was able to pick out a car for my 16th birthday and there were many different types of cars to choose from and that I liked. My parents sat me down and explained to me that before they would agree to officially buy me a car that I had to pick the right car for the right reasons before they would truly agree on buying the car. People like cars for so many different reasons, such as, mileage, color, speed, motor size, the make of the car, and the price. So after a mont of pondering I finally decided on the perfect vehicle for myself. It was a 2001 Chrystler PT Cruiser. It was the color I wanted for a vehicle, black, and it only had 19,200 miles on it. The most important thing that made my final decision on purchasing this vehicle was that I got it for a great price of $9, 200. Based on the criteria I chose my parents agreed to purchase the PT Crusier for me and I received it with a big red bow on it on my actual birthday. Also, I was able to learn how to make smarter decisions with other stuff through out my life.

Your Trusted Friends

The article “Your Trusted Friends”, taken from Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal gives us an idea of what Roy A. Kroc and Walt Disney used in their companies to become as successful as they have become, also it informs us of how the strategies used by both men have shaped our seller/consumer relationships today. The article focuses on the two franchises of McDonalds, and Disneyland/Disneyworld, the strategies that both men used to create such wonderful attributes to the world are revealed. The target of children plays a big role in how both of the companies have become so popular, it was mentioned by Schlosser, “Indeed, market research has found that children ofted recognize a brand logo before they can recognize their own name” (766). The article explains how the market industry has grown an overwhelming size over the past few decades, from more than newspaper articles, to commercials, to now even advertising in schools. It is explained that the success from both of the companies has also influenced many other establishments to keep up in the dog eat dog industries. Schlosser overall discusses the road to success and the amount of influece that companies have on one another. Although many people in society could agree that some of the techniques used are not always the most ideal or the best for our society but this explains the logic and most useful ideas that helped companies go straight to the top.
